Knitting Ninja REDUX

So, my friend Heidi inquired this past weekend about an old drawing of mine. One that she had asked for me to do, back in the early days of college. Specifically she asked if I still had it. Well, I poured through my old files and actually found the image. It looks something like this…

Well, looking back on the image, I was very disappointed. In retrospect, it wasn’t a very good drawing. It’s funny how you look back on your old work and think about all the things you’ve learned and how you’ve improved since that point in your career. Well, looking at it gave me the inspiration to have another go at it. This time, I think it turned out a whole lot better.

More Experiments

This is side 2 of the business card holder. As you can see along the bottom, the melting to fuse the sides together didn't quite work out so well.

I devoted pretty much all of my Sunday this week to try out a couple of ideas that I had recently. First up was a shirt with a bleached design. I went with a simple coy inspired design. It wasn’t completely successful, but it came out well enough to encourage me to try it again (perhaps combining it with screen printing in some way). Next up was a business card holder made with those cool melty beads I used to make my nintendo themed ornaments. This was also not entirely successful, but I was really just testing it out. Turns out it is not very easy to fuse together a box made of these beads. Next go around I’ll probably use some sort of glue or epoxy to bind together the sides. All in all, these were really fun things to try out! (Click the thumbnails for the whole gallery of images).

Shirt number 1 has the design on the bottom along the side of the shirt, underneath the arm.Shirt number 2 has the design more to the front of the shirt, but still along the bottom.Side 1 of the business card holder. I tried to design it to fit the cards as closely as possible to make it small and easy to carry. I made it slightly too small though...This is side 2 of the business card holder. As you can see along the bottom, the melting to fuse the sides together didn't quite work out so well.

Also, Saturday night I went out to see a friend of mine and his band Vinny Vegas play at The Ottobar. I highly recommend, they put on a really great show.

Crafts and Kisses ‘08

So the girlfriend and a mutual friend of ours decided that Crafts and Kisses ‘08 was the place to be on this fine Sunday. I was a little hesitant to go, at first, seeing as how the crafty scene isn’t really my thing, but I decided to go and am very glad that I did. I thought it might end up being home made jewelery and knitting projects and such, which is fine, but not what I’m into. As it turns out, there WAS some of that, but there was also a wealth of people selling their own creations of varying different professions. I snagged some pretty cool gear, and handed out some of my business cards and stickers. (If any people from the craft fair are coming to my site right now and are looking for services, or even just to say “hey!” head on over to the About Page and fill out the contact form. woot!)

So, some of the cool stuff I picked up include a pretty sweet belt from Jon Wye. The girlfriend picked up a killer shirt from Red Prairie Press, both of which received some stickers in exchange for their goods (and money, of course, my stickers aren’t THAT cool…yet). I also picked up a really sweet custom Moleskine notebook with a tin robot illustration on the front. I wish I knew who it was I purchased it from, but I couldn’t see any cards or info on their desk, and I was kind of rushed past their table after I purchased it. (If you guys are here, I’m sorry! Hit me up an email and I can link to you too!)

All in all, a pretty good Sunday. On the way home, we saw two more pretty sweet things. First, a pretty vomit inducing house, and possibly the creepiest statue I’ve seen personally.

Keepin’ it Gangster

Messing around with some sketching today and busted out a quick dick tracy / old detective comic style gangster bad guy. I’m pretty happy with it as far as quick sketches go. Check it out here.
